So you kind of know how you’ve wanted things to play out, i.e. your life, and along the way, major tweeks happen or S___ happens, and things change. We adjust, compromise, turn 180 degree in shock, and move on. And as we move on, pieces of the dream fall by the wayside. We glance longingly one last time, at it broken, crushed, smashed and torn on the ground…and we move on. The gait is slower, with some pains, scars and regrets. But you continue. A little cellophane wrapper, or piece of sticky note of a dream is still clinging to the bottom of your worn out Birkenstock. With some irritation but curiosity, you yank it off your shoe, and look. I remember when…and the present looks a little less right.

My Dream about Mom – December 22, 2008

I dreamed that I took Mom home from wherever she was staying so I could give her a sponge bath, chose a nice outfit out for her, so when she died, she would be “ready.” When I got her home, she was talking up a storm, remembering things, and hungry, so I give her 3 -4 bowls of rice and food and she ate it heartily. Then she asked about Nate’s baby, Brandon and she remembered how old they are, etc. She was walking around unassisted and talking a lot. She took a short nap, and I thought that her memory, etc. would be gone, but I asked her what she wanted to do today, and she said that she needed to go shopping for a new outfit, and continued to chat. Pauline was with me when this was happening and then I asked if I should call the other siblings like Doreen and Matt and let them know. We thought we better and then I had a hard time remembering Matt’s phone number.

In the meantime, Brandon and Tara came over and told Mom that they were going to get married and that they wanted to formally announce their engagement. Mom was really happy. We just kept wondering if Mom’s change should be reported to the doctors and then decided later, since this might be her final burst of adrenaline or something and that she would revert soon.

Then I woke up…that’s what I get for sleeping in.

Tied House

So what does the name mean? Only old folks care to ask. Because when you’re young, you want everyone to assume you know what everything means and so you want others to think you know because you think they know and if they know, then surely I should know or they’ll know that you don’t know and that wouldn’t be good, you know?

So I asked…being old and not giving a damn what others think for about a decade and a half now. Then I thought I saw something on the back page of the menu near the booze list. There was some copy most would dismiss as marketing junk to fill the space on the huge 3 feet long menu that looked history-ish. So I flipped over to the back and of course, the print was under some plastic protection, and it was getting late and the lighting was good for my wrinkly face, but not good for squinting, telescoping arm reading. Katie read it outloud in her clear as a bell, ice water on your back, voice.

In England, there were two types of beer establishments back in the old days (whenever) – those that would serve any brew from any brewery, or those with more discriminating taste, that is, those that served brews that came from only one or their own brewery. So if you were a “tied” house – you were serving only brews that were tied to one specific brewery, and not the riff raff non-discriminating breweries that mixed rat pee in with their beer (just kidding – they didn’t say that).

Remember how you politely tried not to throw up and puke your guts out when old people use to talk about their aches, pains, medications, open sores, oozing boils, etc.? Yeah, I remembered and thought, Holy S____, I hope they kill me before I ever get this bad. But one day, after a food coma, I woke up and realized that I am one of those old ladies with questionable stains and smells, and along with me is my wonderful husband, and companion in gross leakage. It’s bad, but he’s getting better and Stephanie still can’t look at his leg. I took pictures and am contemplating on how we can post it or include it in our Christmas newsletter. Since we’re old like that, many of our friends are there also, whether they want to admit it or not. Yeah, I’m talking about you!

Nobody grows old gracefully – we’re lucky we don’t leave a stain when we get up from our seats.

Spent the day with Joyce, Mother of the Bride. Wow! Janice is really going to get married. It wasn’t that long ago she had on her little white tights, red velvet dress and patten leather shoes for the Christmas program. Now she’s grown up and we’re still not able to wrap our feeble minds around this. She’s going to be a beautiful bride, a great wife and companion and eventually a wonderful Mom too. How did all of this happen?

And how do you wrap your head around this if you’re Joyce and Joe? It’s their firstborn, their baby, the one they followed up the carpeted stairs teaching her how to crawl up the stairs and crawling down with them, feet first so she’ll be safe. That picture in my head says it all about the devotion and love these 2 had for their baby girl. The same baby girl who Joe will be walking down the aisle on Saturday, the one that Joyce will fuss over, adjusting her dress one more time, one last time. It’s sooo sad and sooo wonderful and sooo unbelieveable.

We love you Janice, our baby, from a proud “auntie” Elaine.
